"Curious" (Day 32)
Verse of the Day
“Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God” – John 3:1-2
I have always been a seeker. Even as a child, I tested things—once tipping over a baby carriage just to see what would happen. I watched closely, learned deeply, and carried that curiosity into life.
I grew up in a home shaped by books, observation, and steady rhythms. My father taught me to pay attention. My mother filled my world with reading. On the farm, I learned responsibility—feeding chickens, checking the spring, watching life unfold. I explored creeks with my dog, always wondering what was around the next bend.
College stretched me. Physical chemistry and calculus were hard. I learned my limits. I learned to try again. That same persistence carried me into medicine, where I found joy in orthopedics—putting things back together, like the treehouses I built as a boy.
A defining moment came during my residency, when I met Linda. Our love grew slowly, kindly. For 47 years, we have practiced respect and patience. That has been our strength.
There were other turning points. Activism during the Biafra crisis showed me both the power and limits of human effort. A stroke later in life forced me to adapt, to practice again and again, learning perseverance in a new way.
My faith journey has been different. I do not see God as a personal being, yet I deeply value truth, compassion, and community. I admire Jesus and his teachings. I continue to seek, to question, to live with honesty.
Looking back, I see a journey marked by curiosity, challenge, love, and persistence. I am still learning. Still seeking. – Chet Husted
